Could a Legionella Risk Assessment have prevented a Boldon Legionnaires' outbreak?
Faltec Europe were fined £1.6 million following an outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease at a factory in South Tyneside.
The Legionnaires' virus was identified within cooling towers at the site.
If an effective Legionella Risk Assessment had been undertaken, with sufficient control measures implemented to manage Legionella, the outbreak may have been prevented.
If you think your business or premises require a Legionella Risk Assessment to ensure compliance and protect your stakeholders, then please get in touch.

Scientific Services is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Gundy. Based in Cardiff, Mike operates from a mobile laboratory, and provides a range of asbestos air monitoring and four stage clearance services.
His strategic positioning in Cardiff, reduces the travel to sites throughout Wales and the surrounding regions. This ensures that the company continues to provide more efficient and cost effective asbestos solutions to its clients.
Mike has worked in the asbestos industry for nearly ten years, and brings a wealth of experience and valuable skills to the environmental consultancy's asbestos team.
His appointment is key in facilitating the continued geographic expansion of the asbestos air monitoring service portfolio. As well as assisting in reducing the asbestos division's carbon footprint.
Chris Goodman, an experienced Asbestos Consultant, with strong industry knowledge joins Scientific Services. Chris is based in Taunton and this enables the company to expand its UKAS accredited Asbestos Air Monitoring and Four Stage Clearance service provisions. He will predominantly cover jobs throughout the South West, into Cardiff and as far east as Southampton on a travel free basis.

Scientific Services, one of the UK’s leading, independent companies in analysing and consulting on the environment and asbestos, is pleased to announce the launch of its new website. The website developed with Creative Edge, is hoped to raise awareness of the company brand, assist with cross selling its complimentary service portfolio and improve data management through a secure customer login area.
The website is expected to support a continued increase in turnover throughout 2009/10 and the company’s growth strategy. Dr Tim Hamilton, Managing Director of Scientific Services, said: “Our success in highly competitive markets, is based on our scientific expertise and experience but our dedication to the provision of excellent customer service and innovative added service benefits have been key to the high quality service delivery that our clients have become accustomed to.
It is hoped that the website will enhance and support our UKAS accredited service provisions and improve our online presence.”
The new website will also facilitate the imminent launch of a new nationwide service for contractors involved in the removal of asbestos, which will assist in ensuring that they meet their legislative requirements for monitoring employee exposure levels.
Scientific Services has developed test methods and internal quality assurance systems that enable their asbestos bulk analysis laboratory to accurately classify sample types for bulk material samples.
This density test will enable the consultancy’s customers to obtain the information required, to ensure, with certainty, that the management practices adopted for an asbestos removal project are in line with current legislation.
The water absorption test is the industry standard for assessing the density of a sample and determining whether it is cement or insulation board. The importance attached to deciphering the sample type, relates to the legislation governing the removal of asbestos, which classifies insulation board as a licensable material and cement as a non-licensable product. The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2006, depict distinctly contrasting methods for the removal of these two sample types.
Scientific Services relocation to larger, purpose built laboratories and office space near St Austell will support the consultancy’s growth strategy. The state of the art laboratories and offices provide larger, quality premises and facilities that compliment their high quality brand.
The more centrally located head office at St Austell has enabled the consultancy to support two new recruits; an additional Asbestos Bulk Analyst and a Laboratory Administrator have now joined the team to support the expansion of the consultancy’s competitive service portfolio.
A valued member of Scientific Services has relocated to Scotland, an experienced Asbestos Consultant, with strong industry knowledge; Cameron Duncan is an asset to the team. His experience and strong capabilities in the asbestos field have enabled the consultancy to expand its geographical coverage of its existing asbestos air monitoring and clearance services.
Based in Dundee, Scotland the new satellite mobile laboratory and Asbestos Consultant, shall enable Scientific Services to offer its competitive and efficient air testing services throughout the East of Scotland and to tap into regions from Edinburgh, up to Inverness and the highlands. The full range of asbestos air monitoring and clearance services will be available immediately, to asbestos contractors, the public sector and companies or individuals that are looking to appoint an analytical asbestos consultancy directly.
